Bloating is one of the most common symptom seen in people suffering from gastrointestinal problems. While it can be a symptom of underlying serious conditions related to intestines , sometimes it is the simple ignorance of not knowing what to eat! I often come across many of my clients who ask me what causes bloating and how to get rid of it. It can be almost triggered by any type of the food you eat some foods have natural tendency to cause bloating soon after eating.

Foods that cause Bloating

  1. Legumes like beans and peas

  2. Cruciferous Vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli.

  3. Lentils

  4. Onions

  5. Nuts like peanuts and cashews

  6. Carbonated drinks

  7. Wheat

  8. Artificial sweeteners

  9. Red meat

Diseases that can cause bloating

  • Appendicitis

  • Gastroenteritis

  • Crohn's disease

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • Constipation

  • Celiac disease

  • Dysmenorrhea

  • Ovarian cancer

  • Lactose Intolerance and Food allergies

What does Ayurveda say?

Any disease according to ayurveda arises from derangement of agni which leads to improper digestion of the food we eat and which in turn causes the formation of toxic food waste called "AMA". AMA is considered as one of the prime reasons for many diseases. While describing about "AMA" ayurveda says one of the symptoms for identifying ama is gas, bloating, tummy ache and indigestion. In gist it means if you are constantly suffering from bloating, gas and indigestion. It is evident that the food you are eating is not right for your body type. It should get digested easily with out disturbing any balance in the body. Bloating is one of the common symptoms seen in several diseases pertaining to digestive tract. Food and lifestyle play a vital role in causing any kind of disease in our body.

10 rules for eating well according to ayurveda

  • Food should be hot

  • Food should be unctuous

  • Food should be taken in proper quantity

  • Food should be only taken after the previous meal is digested

  • Ingredients of food should not be contradictory in their potency

  • Food should be taken in a pleasant place along with required accessories

  • Food should not be taken in excessive hurry

  • Food should not be taken exceedingly slow

  • While eating food one should neither talk nor laugh but concentrate only on eating

  • Only such food should be taken which is suitable for constitution and psychic temperament of a person

 

TIPS FOR AVOIDING BLOATING

Eat on regular time

It is recommended that eating food on time is good for maintaining body's biological rhythm. Skipping meals is another practice which is not considered good especially someone who suffers from bloating and gas.

Exercise regularly

Exercising helps in releasing certain enzymes which aid in digestion to go smoothly and also improves the metabolism.

Breathe and Meditate

Stress can make bloating worse so breathing in and meditating are helpful in tackling any kind of stress in your life.

Avoid Raw, dry foods

Ayurveda says raw, dry and cold foods cause vata imbalance in your body which is mainly responsible for causing bloating and gas in your body. Avoid dry and raw sandwiches, dry green salads and too much fried foods.

Ginger and fennel

Sip few drops of ginger and fennel few times a day to help with bloating. chewing fennel seeds directly also helps in tackling bloating and gas.

Sesame oil & Ghee

Daily intake of sesame oil and ghee intake helps in moisturizing colon and tackles dryness inside the colon and helps in constipation.

Triphala, Isabgol and Rock salt

Tripahala is one of the best combination formula to aid digestion and to detox colon as explained by ayurveda. Isabgol also aids in detoxing and eliminating the feces from body. Rock salt helps in improving digestion and eliminating. These herbs are suggested for learning purpose only not for intake with out proper guidance.
